Summer signing Omar El Kaoutari gave Palermo a last-gasp victory over Genoa after hitting the woodwork twice.

There were big changes for both sides over the summer, as these are clubs who find great talents and sell them on at a huge profit. Gian Piero Gasperini had more adjustments than expected, as Armando Izzo, Tomas Rincon, Leonardo Pavoletti and Isaac Cofie were suspended, injuries ruled out Mattia Perin, Alassane Tambe, Diogo Figueiras, Ezequiel Munoz and Diego Perotti.

Genoa only won this top flight fixture twice before, in 1935 and 2008, along with five draws and 10 defeats.

Stefano Sorrentino needed two early desperate saves on Goran Pandev, one palming it one-handed on to the upright. However, Palermo had an incredible opportunity when Luca Rigoni chested and volleyed a corner on to the crossbar from close range.

The Sicilians were struggling and Beppe Iachini made a tactical change after 33 minutes, replacing Ivaylo Chochev with new signing Aleksandar Trajkovski. It made an impact, as the substitute had penalty appeals for a last-ditch Giovanni Marchese tackle.

Eugenio Lamanna almost made a real mess of Trajkovski’s simple header, while ex-Manchester City youngster Oliver Ntcham turned wide on Diego Capel’s assist.

Franco Vazquez was unlucky not to put Palermo in front, his strike from outside the box smacking off the crossbar.

Diego Capel made his Serie A debut and lasted just over 15 minutes before limping off.

It looked as if this game would end goalless, but deep into stoppages new buy El Kaoutari managed to bundle in from close range on a free kick to send the Stadio Barbera crowd wild.
